Ultrasound – Wrist Exam

Transducer: SonoSite L25 (linear)

Structures visualized:

  • Carpal bones and joints
  • Extensor tendons of the thumb (looking for De Quervain’s tenosynovitis) — abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis brevis
  • Extensor carpi ulnaris tendon
  • Median nerve (can measure the cross-sectional area for evaluation of carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Radial artery
  • Ulnar nerve

Ultrasound – Lateral Hip

Transducer: SonoSite linear probe [or a C60 (curved) if larger patient]

Structures visualized:

  • Greater trochanter
  • Gluteus medius
  • Gluteus minimus
  • Greater trochanteric bursa (visible if the patient has bursitis)
