Procedure: Intraarticular Hip Injection Under Fluoroscopy – Lateral Approach

Efficacy of Intraarticular Corticosteroid Hip Injections
By Chris Faubel, MD --
Kullenberg et al (2004) evaluated the effectiveness of intraarticular corticosteroid injections in eighty (80) patients with hip osteoarthritis and pain for more than 4 weeks. One group only received 2ml of Kenalog, while the other group received local anesthetic (mepivacaine) only. Intraarticular injections of local anesthetics are great for diagnosing whether "hip pain" is truly from the hip or not. But is it an effective pain reliever weeks later? Are corticosteroids more effective than local anesthetics for the hip? Do either decrease the incidence of total hip arthroplasty? Find out here.

Prevalence of Lumbar Spine Pathology on CAT scans in Asymptomatic Individuals
By Chris Faubel, MD -- We know the high prevalence of lumbar spine pathology via MRI in asymptomatic individuals, but what about CAT scans?
Is Asymptomatic Lumbar Spine Pathology Predictive of Future Low Back Pain?
By Chris Faubel, MD -- Borenstein et al. (2001) sent a questionnaire to 67 individuals whom obtained an MRI seven (7) years prior. The authors were trying to figure out if the painLESS pathology noted seven (7) years earlier, ended up becoming painFUL, and therefore predictive for future episodes of low back pain. They ultimately noted that the asymptomatic findings were NOT predictive of future development or duration of LBP.

Bertolotti’s syndrome – Atypical Cause of Low Back Pain
By Chris Faubel, M.D. -- Bertolotti's syndrome is an atypical cause of axial low back pain or buttock pain caused by a transitional lumbar vertebrae with a large transverse process that either fuses with the sacrum (sacral ala) or ilium, or forms a pseudoarticulation at that location.

Auto-Resorption of Lumbar Disc Herniation
By Chris Faubel, M.D. -- MRIs one year apart showing resorption of a large lumbar disc herniation. This is spontaneous resorption of the disc without any surgical intervention.
